Winter Itinerary (1st May - 30th September)

Even though the sun setting on the West Coast provides good daylight into the evening, it is still limited throughout the Autumn/Winter period. With this in mind we have come up with a brilliant revision to our itinerary that we run from May through to September.

Day 1

We will meet you in Greymouth at 12:30pm and shuttle you to Hokitika. Once here we will drop your luggage off to your accommodation, pickup the bikes, and transfer you up to Lake Kaniere to start the bike ride.

21km cycle from Lake Kaniere to Hokitika
Day 2 Morning shuttle to Ross
33km cycle from Ross to Hokitika
Tree Top Walkway experience
Day 3 Morning shuttle to Lake Kaniere
50km cycle from Lake Kaniere to Kumara
Day 4 28km cycle from Kumara to Greymouth

Why Cycle from Ross to Greymouth?

  • The ascent to the highpoint on Kawheka Pass is completed over a much shorter distance by riding in this direction. Once at the top, you get to ride towards the views as you descend into Kumara. This is in comparison to a gradual but consistent climb away from the views when riding in the other direction.

  • The difficulty with securing suitable accommodation around the mid point of the trail is avoided by having two nights in Hokitika, allowing a relaxed two night stay. Plus there are many amazing things to see and do in Hokitika.

  • The dominant southerly wind is often behind the rider for the distance from Ross to Kawheka Pass.

  • Ending in Greymouth times in perfectly with taking the TranzAlpine Express train for a spectacular finish into Christchurch on Day 4. There are also bus services departing Greymouth as well as the options for groups to book a Cycle Journeys custom shuttle.
